Tradition, meaning, and purpose

What is Shri Ram Shalaka Prashnavali?

Shri Ram Shalaka Prashnavali, also commonly called Ramayana Prashnavali, is a traditional devotional method of seeking guidance through selected chaupais of Shri Ramcharitmanas. It is best approached as a practice of reflection, prayer, and interpretation rather than instant fortune telling.

Think of it as a devotional path of reflection, not only a result generator

The outer process is simple, but the real depth appears when the revealed chaupai is read with its chapter context, meaning, and devotional intention.
  • Also known as Ramayana Prashnavali
Many people search for this practice as Ramayana Prashnavali, even though the guidance comes from selected chaupais of Shri Ramcharitmanas.
  • The mindset matters
A calm mind, a sincere question, and a devotional attitude are central to the experience. The answer is meant to be received in that same spirit.
  • Answers appear in Hindi
The first answer appears as a Hindi chaupai line. The app then helps you read it with context, meaning, and audio.
The tradition

Where does this tradition come from?

The Ram Shalaka table has long been printed at the beginning of popular editions of Shri Ramcharitmanas, including the widely read Gita Press (Gorakhpur) editions. The word 'shalaka' means a thin rod or pointer. Traditionally a devotee would close their eyes, remember Shri Ram, and place the shalaka on one letter of the printed table.

From that chosen letter, every ninth letter is collected in sequence, and together they spell out one of nine answer lines; each is a chaupai line of the Ramcharitmanas. This app follows the same table and the same counting; the only difference is that your finger replaces the printed page and the shalaka.

Ramcharitmanas Prashnavali

Why it is also called Ramcharitmanas Prashnavali

Every answer of Shri Ram Shalaka comes from a chaupai of Shri Ramcharitmanas, composed by Goswami Tulsidas. That is why the same practice is also known as Ramcharitmanas Prashnavali or Ramayan Prashnavali.
  • Rooted in the Manas
The nine answer lines are drawn from eight chaupais spread across the kands (chapters) of Shri Ramcharitmanas.
  • One tradition, many names
Ram Shalaka, Ramayan Prashnavali, and Ramcharitmanas Prashnavali all describe this same practice of devotional guidance.
How it works

From question to guidance

The process is straightforward, but the devotional posture matters. These steps explain why the practice feels different from a casual random selection.
  1. 1Hold your question clearly in mind and approach the process with sincerity.
  2. 2Touch one cell of the grid. The pattern eventually leads you to a specific answer line.
  3. 3Read the revealed result, which first appears as a Hindi chaupai line, then move to the full chaupai, its chapter, and its meaning.
  4. 4Place the guidance into your life with reflection, prayer, and sound judgment.
