The nine Ram Shalaka answers and their meanings

Every cell in the chart resolves to one of these nine answer lines from Shri Ramcharitmanas.

Answer 1
सुनु सिय सत्य असीस हमारी। पूजिहि मन कामना तुम्हारी॥
The questioner's question is excellent, the task will be accomplished.
O Sita, listen to our true blessing, your desire will be fulfilled. Narada's word is always pure (free from doubt, delusion, etc.) and true. Whatever your heart is attached to, that blessing you will receive.

Answer 2
प्रबिसि नगर कीजे सब काजा। हृदयँ राखि कोसलपुर राजा॥
Keep Lord Ram in your heart and begin your task, you will be successful.
Keep Lord Raghunathji, the King of Ayodhya, in your heart, and then enter the city and perform all tasks. For him, poison turns into nectar, enemies become friends, the ocean becomes as small as a cow's hoof print, and fire becomes cool.

Answer 3
उघरहिं अंत न होइ निबाहू। कालनेमि जिमि रावन राहू॥
This task is not good. There is doubt about the success of the task.
Even those who are deceivers, when they appear in good (saintly) attire, are honored by the world due to the power of their appearance. However, one day, they are inevitably exposed. Their deception cannot last forever, just as it happened with Kalanemi, Ravana, and Rahu.

Answer 4
बिधि बस सुजन कुसंगत परहीं। फनि मनि सम निज गुन अनुसरहीं॥
Abandon the company of wicked people. The completion of the task is doubtful.
Even the wicked can improve through the company of the virtuous, just as iron becomes beautiful (turns into gold) upon touching the philosopher's stone. However, if by fate, a good person falls into bad company, they still follow their own virtues, like the gem on a serpent’s head. Just as the gem, despite being with the serpent, does not absorb its poison and continues to shine with its natural light, in the same way, a virtuous person, even in the company of the wicked, continues to spread light without being influenced by them.

Answer 5
होइहि सोइ जो राम रचि राखा। को करि तर्क बढ़ावै साखा॥
There is doubt about the completion of the task, therefore it is better to leave it to Lord Ram.
Whatever Lord Ram has destined will happen. Who can change it by arguing? Saying this, Lord Shiva began to chant the name of Hari, and Sati went to the place where Lord Ram, the abode of bliss, was present.

Answer 6
मुद मंगलमय संत समाजू। जो जग जंगम तीरथ राजू॥
The question is excellent. The task will be accomplished.
The company of saints is filled with joy and brings well-being; it is like a moving, living Prayagraj (the king of holy places) in the world. In this saintly gathering, there is the stream of devotion to Lord Ram, like the sacred Ganges, and the spread of knowledge of the divine, like the Saraswati river.

गरल सुधा रिपु करहिं मिताई। गोपद सिंधु अनल सितलाई॥
The question is very good. The task will be successful.

Neither Varuna, Kubera, Indra, nor Vayu could stand firm before you in battle. O Lord! With the strength of your arms, you even conquered Time and Yamaraja. Yet today, you lie here helpless, like an orphan.

Answer 9
सुफल मनोरथ होहुँ तुम्हारे। रामु लखनु सुनि भए सुखारे॥
The question is very good. The task will be accomplished.
Receiving the flowers, the sage performed the worship. Then, he blessed both brothers, saying, "May your desires be fulfilled." Hearing this, Ram and Lakshman felt joyful.

सुनु सिय सत्य असीस हमारी। पूजिहि मन कामना तुम्हारी॥ नारद बचन सदा सुचि साचा। सो बरु मिलिहि जाहिं मनु राचा॥
This verse (chaupai) is from the Balakanda, in the context of Sitaji's worship of Gauriji. Gauriji has blessed Sitaji.
